Introduction to Metagenomics

The hands-on Introduction to Metagenomics workshop introduces tools and workflows used to explore amplicon and shotgun metagenomics sequence data.

Workshop Information

City Location Date Workshop Costs
Sydney Macquarie University 11th July – 12th July 2017 $330 (plus GST)

Workshop Content

Topics covered by this workshop include:

  • Amplicon target population structure using QIIME
  • Whole metagenome shotgun processing using EMBL-EBI Metagenomics Portal
  • Whole metagenome shotgun processing using open access software
  • Quality control of metagenomic sequence data using FASTQC
  • Gene and functional prediction using InterProScan
  • Analysis and visualisation of results
  • Detecting/Identifying enriched gene processes and functions (GO)

This workshop will be delivered using a mixture of lectures, hands-on practical sessions, and open discussions. The draft workshop timetable can be viewed hereContent and timetable subject to change.

Learning Objectives

After this course you should be able to:

  • Evaluate and apply appropriate technologies and methodologies
  • QC of data sets
  • Apply basic workflows for amplicon based metagenomics
  • Apply basic workflows for whole genome shotgun metagenomics

Recommended Participants

The metagenomics workshop is aimed at bench biologists with little or no experience of bioinformatics who are working in the area of metagenomics. The workshop utilises the Linux command-line. Although no prior programming experience is required familiarity will be useful.

Workshop Trainers

  • Paul Greenfield (Bioinformatician, CSIRO)
  • Dr Annette McGrath (Principal Research Scientist, Data61, CSIRO)
  • Dr Paula Moolhuijzen(Bioinformatician, Curtin University)
