Wheat Sequencing

Genome sequences are key to understanding the molecular basis of phenotypic traits and variation.

Bioplatforms Australia will contribute to a wheat reference genome to accelerate the identification and isolation rate for new traits and varieties. Sequencing datasets will offer new insights to genetic variability and provide breeders with fresh opportunities to harvest beneficial traits for  greater wheat productivity.

The work program will take advantage of Bioplatforms Australia significant capabilities in next-generation sequencing and compliment international sequencing efforts.  Datasets will cover:

Chromosome 7A

The International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC) has engaged a number of countries to tackle the sequencing and assembly of the wheat genome, with Australia taking responsibility for chromosome 7A.

Wheat Variety Sequencing

Bioplatforms Australia will provide genome sequencing for up to 23 key wheat varieties of importance to Australia. The first 16 varieties have been selected by research and industry partners based on their genetic diversity and existing relevance to the Australian wheat research community.
